The TV, which comes in either a flat or curved version, features a special bracket on the back that allows a variety of interchangeable stands to be attached.
Competition entrants are invited to rethink traditional television stands to create a design that can be fastened to this bracket – and must submit their ideas in the next six weeks.
Samsung is looking for outstanding designs that show how a TV is no longer a technology item, but a lifestyle product.
The brand would like entrants to have a particular lifestyle in mind and design their stand to match it. This could be minimal, eccentric or luxurious for example.
The competition has €30,000 total prize money with €8,000 for the winner, €3,000 each for the other four finalists and €1,000 for the 10 that make it as far as the shortlist.
The rights to the design will remain with the contestants but they may be given the chance to enter a separate agreement with Samsung.
The competition is free to enter, with professional designers, non-designers, students and teams invited to participate. Entrants must be over 18 and able to present their work to a panel of English-speaking judges.
Winners will be selected by a jury consisting of:
› Moon Soo Kim, head of TV sales and marketing team for Samsung, Visual Display Business;
› Yun Je Kang, head of TV design team for Samsung, Visual Display Business;
› David Lowes, SVP and European CMO for Samsung;
› Rima Sabina Aouf, deputy editor of Dezeen.
A mockup of the finalists’ designs will be produced by Samsung and shown at electronics trade show IFA, in Berlin in September 2017. All five will be invited to travel to Berlin and present their work, before the winner is selected.
Dezeen will also interview the finalists and publish a short movie about each one. Shortlisted designs will also be published.
